The statement below is by Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. regarding the passing of former President Jimmy Carter

“The Camden County Board of Commissioners and I are deeply saddened by the news that former President Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100. I remember when I first entered public service, I had to ask myself what kind of leader I wanted to be, and nobody laid the blueprint for true goodness and strength like President Carter. His approach to leadership was defined by empathy, kindness, support, and a genuine unrelenting desire to make the world a better place.

Known as the shining example of morality in leadership, Carter led the nation through a tumultuous crisis following the end of the Vietnam War and was unapologetic with his advocacy for human rights concerns, environmental protections, and world peace. Unlike most presidents, Carter was lauded for his humanitarian efforts for decades after his presidency. For more than 30 years, he worked with Habitat for Humanity to construct over 4,300 new homes with the help of his wife, Rosalynn Carter. This was a feat which inspired millions of Americans nationwide.

President Carter was a truly American story, growing up in humble beginnings on a peanut farm in Georgia, and making his way to the highest office in our country, all with the same humility and grace that earned the trust of the American people.

As a nation we have lost a great leader, but as a people, we have not lost the love and kindness he fostered. I truly believe that every American is better off today because Jimmy Carter was here.”
