José Brito
2024 Camden County Prominent Hispanic Award Winner

From the Dominican Republic to a Legacy of Empowerment in Camden, New Jersey, José Brito immigrated to the United States in 1992, leaving behind a challenged neighborhood in the capital of the Dominican Republic. Through hard work, discipline, and continuous self-improvement, Brito has transformed himself into a successful entrepreneur, exemplary citizen, and charitable giver dedicated to empowering minorities through better education in the challenged city of Camden, New Jersey.

Brito attributes much of his success to the early lessons learned from his mother, who ran a small street side tea and coffee stand in their Santo Domingo neighborhood. These experiences in entrepreneurship were crucial in shaping Brito into the businessman and human being he is today. He also deeply honors the sacrifices of his father, who ventured across the Atlantic Ocean by boat and arrived in Camden undocumented. Through hard work and the support of friends, his father was able to acquire a small grocery store and eventually gain legal status, allowing him to bring Brito to this great nation.

Arriving in the U.S. in search of a better future, Brito discovered the abundant resources and opportunities available in America. He started working at a young age while pursuing a formal education, eventually graduating with honors in Political Science from Rowan University. His early work experiences helped him develop the discipline and resilience needed to face the challenges of this demanding world.

In 2008, Brito founded We Care, a successful agency that provides in-home care services to the elderly and disabled in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. His company has contributed to addressing the challenges posed by the nation’s growing aging population. For an extended period, Brito’s mission has been to fight for better education, dedicating time and expertise to volunteer work in the city and county of Camden. From 2013 to 2019, he served as a member of the Camden City School District’s Board of Education. Between 2016 and 2018, he was part of the Hispanic Leadership Summit of New Jersey. In 2019, he became a member of the National Democratic Campaign Committee and joined the Board of Directors of the Dominican Chamber of Commerce.

That same year, Brito was appointed Treasurer of the Camden Educational Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the progress of the public education system in Camden by working with families and leaders to identify educational needs, provide resources, and develop strategic partnerships. Brito is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Campaign for Great Camden Schools. Since 2021, he has been involved with this independent group that seeks to recruit strong candidates to serve on the Camden City Board of Education. In 2021, Brito also joined the Board of Directors of Advocates for Great Camden Schools, an organization focused on developing an excellent education system in the city.

On June 2nd, Brito spoke in Camden before Marcia L. Fudge, the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, who later expressed that Brito’s insights on housing infrastructure and elder care were critical to President Joe Biden’s national jobs plan. In 2022, Brito joined the Camden City Zoning Board.
