I spent the first nine years of my life immersed in the vibrant culture and traditions of Venezuela, which has profoundly shaped my identity and commitment to the Hispanic community throughout my life. This background guided my educational journey. I graduated from Rowan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in K-12 Education, focusing on teaching Spanish. Driven by a passion for education, I returned to Rowan to earn a Master’s Degree in Higher Education with a concentration in English as a Second Language. As an adjunct professor at my alma mater, I developed a deep passion for my students, championing their communication skills to help them navigate everyday life through language.
Our family’s journey continued when we migrated to the United States, initially settling in Philadelphia. Ten years later, we moved to Pennsauken, which felt like coming home due to its rich diversity. This connection to the community eventually led me to run for Pennsauken Township Committee in 2018. I was honored to serve as Committeewoman, Deputy Mayor, and Mayor. I have had the distinction to have made history as the first female of Middle Eastern and Hispanic descent to serve as Deputy Mayor in 2021 and Mayor in 2022. During my term as Mayor, I proudly served alongside Nicole Roberts, the first female African American Deputy Mayor.
I remain committed to creating positive and enduring influence on our amazing community through multiple initiatives. Economic development has been key focus for me, particularly as my family owns small businesses in Pennsauken, including HR Exporter where I manage operations. In addition to my oversight of economic development for the Township, as Deputy Mayor I also oversee our amazing Public Works Department and all our incredible public events.
Given my fluency in English, Spanish, and Arabic, ensuring effective communication within our multicultural community is a priority. I have worked diligently to provide translations in all three languages to bridge communication gaps for non-English speakers. One of my passions is Autism Awareness, a cause that has become deeply personal. As an elected official, I have used my platform to raise awareness and support for families affected by autism. In April 2024, Pennsauken hosted its first annual Autism Awareness event, which I was proud to help organize.
Additionally,I am involved with Las Mamas Azules, a global initiative that connects mothers worldwide to share resources and support for families affected by autism. This work is not only a local endeavor but also part of a global effort to make a difference.
On a personal note, I have been married to my wonderful husband Husan for 16 years, and together, we share our greatest joy, our four-year-old daughter Karina. I am honored and blessed to be in a position to help others and continue to cherish my experience as a public servant.
