Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta – Nov. 8
Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta (BBMR) hosted by the Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club(PGRC)
The Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta honors the spirit of Bill Braxton, a Marietta College student whose Lightweight 8 crew went undefeated and won the Dad Vail Regatta in 1973. Later that year, Bill’s life was cut short by a fatal car accident. The Braxton Regatta stands for the selfless dedication of the true oarsman, one who holds the authentic spirit of competition as a healthy, integral part of life. The regatta represents the final fall racing experience for most of the crews as evidenced by their exuberance and spirit of celebration despite the outcome or the conditions they may face in early November. Proceeds from the Regatta help fund college scholarships each year for deserving graduating high school rowers who are selected based upon scholarship, team spirit and leadership.
The Braxton Regatta has been hosted by the Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club (PGRC) for the past 46 years. PGRC was founded in 1938 on historic Boathouse Row on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. It is the oldest active women’s club of its kind in the United States.
