Today, August 3rd, Camden County Commissioner Jeffrey Nash joined elected and school officials to dedicate the newly renovated 4th and Washington Park to Martha F. Wilson, who formerly served as board president for the Camden Advisory Board of Education. Martha passed away suddenly in April 2020 at the age of 67 and to honor her memory, 4th and Washington Park will be renamed as Martha F. Wilson Park.
“She always advocated for the young children here in Camden and this is a wonderful way to honor her life and passions,” said Sheriff Whip Wilson, Martha’s husband. “My family and I are so grateful that her contributions are being celebrated. She will forever be a part of the Camden community through the legacy of her work and through this park dedication.”
In 2018, the park underwent $1.4 million worth of revitalization work including a new and expanded playground and sprayground, fitness equipment, reconstructed basketball and handball courts with sports lighting, a graded lawn for sports practices and active recreation, a walking loop, new fencing around the entire park, a new pavilion with seating, lighting, picnic tables, benches, and landscaping.
“Martha was a tremendous advocate for the children of Camden and this park, where so many students play, is a fitting tribute to her name and legacy in the city,” Nash said. “The city is a better place because of Martha, and we will celebrate her memory on Thursday in the neighborhood her and Whip spent so much of their time.”
