More than two years ago Gov. Phil Murphy pledged more than $250 million to fully renovate and revise the Walter Rand Transportation Center (WRTC) in Camden City. Since that time, the Camden County Commissioners have been working with the redeveloper and owner of the site, NJ Transit, to create a 21st century transportation hub. At this time, NJ Transit has gotten the forthcoming design of the project to 30% and renderings have been made public for the vision of the space. The newest state budget allocation secured by Majority Leader Louis Greenwald will assist the Camden County Improvement Authority to work with Gilbane to continue the reengineering and rebuilding of this vital community asset.

“The reconstruction of Walter Rand will be a generational investment not only into Camden City, but into South Jersey,” Nash said. “This allocation from the state will be extremely helpful for the county and the other stakeholders in this process to ensure we have not only a busy transit hub, but a genuine sense of place on the expanded footprint that our community can be proud of when they utilize it.”

Assembly Majority Leader, Louis Greenwald, talked about the investment into WRTC being good for the transit hub and the surrounding neighborhoods and anchor institutions surrounding it.

“With this funding, the Walter Rand Transportation Center is poised to transform into the heart of South Jersey’s transit network,” Greenwald said. “This revitalization effort not only enhances its role as the region’s major transportation hub but also revitalizes the surrounding community, ensuring that the center becomes a state-of-the-art gateway connecting Camden and beyond.”
