Honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

For Immediate Release: December 24, 2008

Twenty-two Camden County residents have been chosen to receive the 2009 edition of the Camden County Freedom Medal, honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 23 for their unselfish contributions to improving their community.

“This is Camden County’s way of honoring Dr. King,” said Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli Jr. The award, created in 2001 under the leadership of County Clerk James Beach, honors ideals indicative of the slain civil rights leader.

Cappelli said the medals will be presented during an evening ceremony at the Dennis Flyer Theater on the main campus of the Camden County College in Gloucester Township.

Freeholder Riletta Cream explained that the honorees are selected by an independent, 10-member committee. Each nomination, which includes a 300-word essay in support of the nominee’s accomplishments, is reviewed by the committee. Dr. Mark Doorley, director of the ethics program in Villanova University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, chairs the committee.

The Freedom Medal committee includes Dr. Stella J. Horton, executive director of the Camden Center for Youth Development, Inc.; Rev. Douglas A. Goldsborough Sr., pastor of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Lawnside; Juanita Johnson-Clark, of Lawnside, Rowan University trustee; and, Father Tom Newton of St. Peter Celestine Church in Cherry Hill.

Others serving on the committee include Thomas H. Watkins, financial representative for Lincoln Investment Planning, Inc; Habib Quraishi, a commissioner on the Camden County Human Relations Commission and a member of the Pakistani-American Society of South Jersey; Father Rene Canales, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Berlin; Aqil Khan, vice president of the Washington-based Pakistani American Congress, and Theresa L. Smith, dean of enrollment and student services at Camden County College.
