Camden County Begins Guide Rail Program to Protect Commuter Safety
For Immediate Release: June 2, 2009

Camden
County has launched a plan to replace and install guide rails at
scores of severe gradation drop points throughout the county’s
road network.
“Our
goal is to make Camden County safe for commuters and others who
use our road system. The guide rails guard against accidents at
points of severe grade changes,” said Freeholder Rodney A.
Greco, the board’s liaison to the Department of Public Works.
Greco
said the first phase of construction began with the award of a $161,850
contract for Highway Safety Systems, Inc., to install about 3,800
linear feet of guide rail, mostly in the southern portion of the
county. The freeholder said he expected the work would begin in
early June, following the contract award by unanimous action of
the seven-member governing body at its May 21 meeting.
“Actually,
the project began several months ago with a study by our public
works personnel to identify problems throughout Camden County,”
Greco said. “We expect to receive about $4 million in federal
stimulus funding that would allow us to complete the entire project.”
Within
three years, Greco said, a total of 40,000 linear feet of guide
rail will be installed throughout the entire county.
