Freeholders Poised to Adopt Tax-Cutting Budget for Third Consecutive Year in Camden County
For Immediate Release: May 20, 2009
Contacts: KEN SHUTTLEWORTH
WHAT:
Despite extremely tough economic times, the Camden County Board
of Freeholders plans to adopt a 2009 budget that cuts property taxes
for the third consecutive year without layoffs or reduction in services
. This unprecedented action results from a disciplined, business-like
approach to government, along with a variety of innovative approaches
such as sharing services with other public agencies.
Nonetheless,
about 100 members of the New Jersey Education Association are expected
to attend the budget adoption meeting to oppose the Freeholder Board’s
efforts to reduce the cost of government. “Sadly, the teachers
unions refuse to share in the sacrifice required of us all,”
said Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli Jr. in advance of the meeting.
He cited an email from an NJEA representative who complained the
freeholders have been pursuing a campaign to minimize salaries and
reduce benefits for county employees…(and) now they’re
trying to impose their will on local school districts even though
they have no legal authority to do so and make no financial contribution
to the districts.”
Citing
a Courier-Post editorial critical of the teachers unions for wanting
to preserve the status quo, Cappelli sent an email to thousands
of constituents asking for their support for the freeholders to
continue efforts to reduce taxes. “We will not be intimidated
by a group of special interests trying to impose their will on spending
reductions that are in the best interests of Camden County taxpayers,”
Cappelli wrote.
