For Immediate Release: March 30, 2009

(Camden,
NJ) -- The Camden County Freeholder Board, lead by Freeholder Director
Louis Cappelli, Jr., was joined today by Senator Dana Redd, City
Council President Angel Fuentes and members of the North Camden
Activist Group, SAVE OUR WATERFRONT, in calling on the US Attorney
to investigate alleged criminal activity and alleged fraudulent
use of US HUD dollars by the owners of Northgate 1, located on 7th
Street and the Ben Franklin Bridge.
"For
far too long, the residents of Camden City, particularly Northgate
1, have been subjected to live in conditions that you wouldn't see
in third world nations," stated Freeholder Director Cappelli.
"We gather here today to say enough is enough."
As
reported in the Courier Post on Sunday, March 29, 2009, Northgate
1 has become a breeding ground for known criminals and drug dealers
to live and operate their illegal street businesses.
"Knowingly
providing housing to criminals and drug dealers while accepting
HUD dollars is preposterous, but more importantly, it is illegal.
We are asking that the US Attorney immediately open investigations
on this ownership group," Cappelli continued.
"Northgate
1, as reported, is home to many senior and disabled residents who
have become prisoners in their own homes because of the criminal
activity. We stand here today, united in our efforts, to provide
safe and clean living conditions for these residents," Cappelli
said.
"The
Federal government must act now and end this alleged corruption.
The people of Camden City deserve no less," Cappelli concluded.
County
officials, municipal leaders and activists, and state leaders joined
together nearly a year ago to address the problems plaguing North
Camden.
