Louis M. Venella
Branch of Service: U.S. Army
Length of Service: 2 Years
Rank: CPL.
Armed Conflict: Korea
Campaigns: 45th Army Division was assigned to relieve the 1st
Calvary Division on the front line in Korea November 1951
Background and History:
Became a member of the US Army October 1950 at Fort Dix, NJ. I was
assigned to the newly activated 45th Division of Oklahoma. Basic
infantry training was completed at Camp Polk, Louisiana. On April
1951 the 45th shipped out to Japan, destination Island of Hohkaido
for additional training. November 1951, the 45th was ordered to
take its place on the front lines in Korea. Through training I became
Com-Center Cheif 45th Signal Corp - 45th Division. Shipped back
to the good old USA October 1952 for discharge at Camp Kilmer, NJ.
Experiences:
Our President, Harry Truman, clearly did the right thing on June
1950 to draw the line against the Communists invaders in Korea.
This was truly a United Nations effort in this war. My role was
not special but part of the overall effort with the 45th Division
to do the job assigned. Through the grace of God I was able to return
safe and sound to the US. Unfortunately a number of buddies on Old
Baldy and Heart Break Ridge paid the supreme sacrafice in this the
"Forgotten War".
