What is Cooperative Extension?

The Cooperative Extension Service was established by the United States Congress through the Hatch Act, passed in 1914. The mission of Cooperative Extension is to disseminate (or extend) science-based research in agriculture, family and consumer sciences and youth development (4-H) to the many diverse audiences including homeowners and the agricultural community. The land grant institution in each state is responsible for administering Cooperative Extension. Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, has established a Cooperative Extension office in each county.
Cooperative Extension is jointly funded by Rutgers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Boards of Freeholders in each county. Educational programs are offered without regard to race, sex, handicap, color, national origin, or age. Rutgers Cooperative Extension is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
