Office Overview:
The Prosecutor is the chief law enforcement officer and the foremost
representative of the Governor in the county. Appointed by the Governor,
the Prosecutor has been given the power to use all reasonable and
lawful diligence for the detection, arrest, indictment, and conviction
of offenders against the laws of the state. Except in certain matters
that are handled by the Attorney General, the Prosecutor's Office
oversees all criminal business of the county.
The Prosecutor is appointed to a five-year term by the Governor, but
receives funding from the County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The
2000 operating budget for the Camden County Prosecutor's Office is
$14.7 million.
The Camden County Prosecutor's Office is comprised of one chief prosecutor,
63 assistant prosecutors, one chief of investigators with 113 investigators,
12 agents, and 62 clerical and support staff. In 1999, the CCPO handled
9,168 felony cases. In addition to conducting its own investigations,
the Prosecutor's Office works closely with all local police departments
with the county and adjacent counties.
The office is organized into the following units: Administrative Section,
Major Crimes/Organized Crime, Homicide, Career Criminal, Child Abuse,
Narcotics, Fugitive,Trial Section, Juvenile, Grand Jury, Motions,
Megan's Law, Appeals, Forfeiture,Domestic Violence, and Special Prosecutions.
Other departments within the Prosecutor's Office include Administrative
Services, Office of Victim-Witness Advocacy, Public/Governmental Relations,
the Scientific Unit, and the Intelligence Unit. In addition, the office
provides services to the Camden County Police Academy and conducts
semi-annual firearms qualifications. It also offers a 24-hour-a-day
police legal advisor.
